Happy August, Team Commerce,
As families prepare to head back to school and return to their routines, it’s a good time to discuss our goals for the new fiscal year here at Commerce.
At Commerce, our mission of Strengthening Trust in Utah’s Commercial Activities is defined by our dedication to serving Utah with excellence. Our strategic plan is centered around three key areas:
- First, ensure regulation, enforcement, and education activities are effective, efficient, and relevant in our changing and growing economy.
- Second, ensure management and system infrastructure are up-to-date and prepared to meet the challenges of continued economic growth.
- Third, strengthen and manage employee communication and department culture.
These three factors are the pillars of our plan. Together, our teams can align their efforts to implement these objectives and fulfill our mission.
Enhancing our customer service is one of our main focal points this fiscal year. Our goal is to provide a simpler and streamlined customer experience. We plan to work with every division to improve the user experience. This will be used to transition and update our websites and find areas where we can serve the public more effectively.
Part of the strategic plan also includes an effort to encourage innovation, protect the public from harm, and actively observe and learn within the field of artificial intelligence. As AI redefines our world, we want to tap into its potential responsibly to innovate and safeguard the public. We aim to remain at the forefront of this dynamic field by actively engaging with emerging trends and developments in AI.
Our collective efforts in this field are already being recognized. The Women Tech Council recently spotlighted our work through their 2024 Women Tech Awards, of which I am a finalist. This nomination reflects your dedication to shaping Utah’s tech landscape through good public policy, particularly in artificial intelligence, social media regulation, and blockchain technology. It acknowledges the implementation of the first-in-the-nation DAO Act, which recognizes Decentralized Autonomous Organizations as legal entities with limited liability protection, the Utah Consumer Privacy Act, the Social Media Regulation Amendments Act, and the creation of the Office of Artificial Intelligence Policy. While promoting innovation, we remain committed to protecting the public interest and advocating for regulations that support commerce while safeguarding individuals’ rights and privacy. I’m honored to represent our efforts and achievements.
Turning to our third critical success factor, which is strengthening employee communication and department culture. You may remember that earlier this month, I sent an email reviewing the state’s Division of Human Resources annual survey results. The survey covered employee engagement, work environment, flexibility, and compensation. I want to thank all the employees who took the survey. We take the feedback seriously and continuously work to improve. In our September quarterly One Commerce meeting, we will discuss some of these findings in more detail and let you know what goals we have implemented to address issues that emerged from the survey.
Finally, I look forward to connecting with you all at the annual Commerce Breakfast on September 26. You’ll receive more information soon about the breakfast and where we will be hosting it this year since the plaza is under renovation.
I’m incredibly proud of our excellent work and the work environment at Commerce. We will continue to pursue our mission with passion and to make Commerce the best it can be.
