Executive Director Message – September 2024

September 19, 2024

Hello Team Commerce,

Reflecting on the past month, I am proud of our strides in enhancing customer service and safeguarding Utahns against deceptive companies. Your dedication and hard work haven’t gone unnoticed.

First, our Division of Corporations team successfully rolled out its new online business registration system through Civix. This transition marks a significant milestone towards a more efficient, user-friendly process that supports our local businesses and entrepreneurs, and it bolsters Utah’s reputation as the “Startup State.” The success of this launch is a testament to the Corporations team’s dedication, who spent countless hours planning, troubleshooting, and perfecting the system. No technology rollout is ever completely smooth. We expect to continue to refine Civix in the coming weeks.

Another significant accomplishment, our Division of Consumer Protection team, in collaboration with the Utah Attorney General’s Office, secured a landmark victory against Real Estate Workshop last week. Their relentless efforts in this case have prevented further exploitation of Utahns and held the company and its principals accountable, securing $42.5 million in restitution. This victory underscores our commitment to defending Utah consumers’ rights.

Additionally, our Communications, Securities, DOPL, and DCP teams participated in National Night Out Against Crime events across the state last month. These events uniquely provided the opportunity to connect with law enforcement and educate them and the public on Commerce’s role and how we can help. The positive feedback and heartfelt thank you letters from various police departments prove the significance of these outreach efforts.

Together, we are making significant strides toward our mission of strengthening trust in Utah’s commercial activities. Your dedication to serving Utah with excellence is evident, and the outcomes speak volumes.

Looking ahead, I’m eager to dive deeper into our strategic plan and discuss how it shapes our daily work during this quarter’s One Commerce Meeting today. This plan is pivotal in guiding our efforts toward our mission. I encourage you to review the Strategic Plan on our website before the meeting. We will distribute printed copies of the plan to all employees in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your commitment and hard work. Let’s continue to serve Utah with the excellence it deserves.

Best regards,

Margaret
