Employee Spotlight – Cyndy Nelson

The division I work in is…

Office of the Property Rights Ombudsman

I have worked at Commerce for…

I have worked at Commerce for almost 16 years. Prior to working for Commerce, I worked for the Department of Public Safety as a dispatcher for the Highway Patrol and other state agencies including Wildlife Officers, Adult Parole and Probation, Parks and Rec, and UDOT. I was a dispatcher for a little over 20 years. I’ve seen my fair share.

At Commerce, my job is…

I am an Administrative Secretary. I provide administrative support to our team by interacting with the public in a professional and courteous manner, directing calls, maintaining and archiving records for both case files and land use training funds requests, and assisting in the day-to-day operations of the office. I also serve as the Board Secretary for the Land Use and Eminent Domain Advisory Board.

The best thing about working for the Utah Department of Commerce is…

The best thing about working for Commerce is being part of a team, yet being encouraged to maintain my individuality. I feel my input is just as important as others.

I have professionally grown working in my division because…

I am encouraged to participate in team activities and think outside the box to develop new strategies in which to perform my job and assist my team.

During my workday, I could not live without…

I could not live without the necessary tools in which to complete my job activities. Sweet Tea, Heath bars, and Christmas music is a necessity.

Outside of the office I like to…

I like to spend time with my family and enjoy our weekly family dinner nights with my kids, sisters, nieces, grandkids, and the whole shebang and especially my mom. I have horses with their own personalities and I love to quilt and read.

My superpower is…

My superpower is service. I love being a Christian and like to help family, friends, and co-workers. I like to do work for charitable organizations and random situations in which a person needs assistance. I take the opportunity to “pay it forward” whenever I can.
