Executive Director Message – October 2023

October 20, 2023

Hi, Team Commerce.

I hope this message finds you well and in high spirits. As we bask in the beauty of autumn and witness the vibrant colors of the season, let us take a moment to reflect on the lessons it has to offer. Autumn teaches us the importance of embracing change, shedding what no longer serves us, and finding beauty in letting go.

As we continue implementing our Strategic and Performance Plans, we should acknowledge that change is inevitable, and be willing to let go of outdated processes, barriers, and fears. Now is the perfect time to communicate openly and transparently with any struggles you may have through your quarterly one-on-ones. In addition, the Feedback Form is another way to submit your thoughts and concerns. Let us collaborate and provide constructive feedback to each other. This is an opportunity to share your creativity and ideas for innovation and cultivate a sense of revitalization.

However, effective planning and change management go beyond just implementing new processes or technologies. It is also about our reactions to change and the commitment to stay engaged, curious, and motivated. You have the expertise and skills to navigate any apprehension or challenge. Empower yourself and others to embrace change and progress.

I also encourage you to celebrate your successes, big and small. Share your best practices with others and amplify the good ideas of your team members. Let us assume the best in people and recognize the good work of others. Remember, the GDP recognition program is an excellent way to acknowledge and celebrate each other’s achievements.

These practices are at the heart of strengthening trust in Utah’s commercial activities and in each other as One Commerce.  We are ripe for breakthrough solutions and incredible innovations. In fact, we are already seeing them happen. Here are just a few of the successes we have seen recently.

  • Utah’s Social Media Regulation Act Rule published
  • TikTok lawsuit filed
  • DCP, with the assistance of the AG’s staff, successfully argued that TikTok has failed to comply with a series of subpoenas
  • CLEAR Conference support and multiple presentations by Commerce staff
  • DOPL investigation lead to a major felony arrest of an unlicensed medical esthetics practitioner
  • Utah ranked #1 for Home Energy Efficiency through OCS and DPU-supported efficiency programs

I am confident that we will continue to navigate change, embrace progress, and achieve great things together. Let us move forward with enthusiasm, optimism, and a positive attitude.

Thank you for your dedication and hard work serving our great state of Utah.

Margaret
